What is it?
Cissus Quadrangularis is a medicinal plant found in India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Africa. The plant extract contains a plethora of compounds including the antioxidant quercetin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and the popular bioactives ketosteroids and reservatrol.
What does it do?
This perennial plant is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine as an alternative treatment for bone and joint health, digestive health, and most recently, weight loss.
Cissus Quadrangularis has long been used as an aid for digestive health. Supplementation of this ancient member of the grape family can act as a proton pump inhibitor, decreasing the acidity of your stomach. It has been shown to prevent stomach wall damage as well as preventively protect against stomach ulcers.1
Any athlete, fitness enthusiast, or new gym goer knows that you need to take care of your joints to stay active. Researchers note that ingestion of Cissus Quadrangularis may be able to markedly improve joint and bone health. Osteoblasts are single nuclei cells that work in unison with other osteoblasts to form bone tissue. Oral doses of Cissus Quadrangularis can stimulate the growth of osteoblasts and other bone forming cells to improve regeneration of connective tissues. This may help speed up the healing process by up to two weeks!2
Perhaps the most appealing benefit of Cissus Quadrangularis is that it may help lower body weight in overweight individuals. An 8-week trial found that overweight people who supplemented with Cissus Quadrangularis experienced a 5.4% reduction in body mass index. Supplementation was associated with a 21% increase in HDL or “good” cholesterol and a 53% increase in the mood-balancing neurotransmitter serotonin. This hormone has been shown to reduce binge eating, which can help keep your calories in check.3
Now, losing weight with Cissus Quadrangularis is great, but what we really want to target is that inner tube around our stomach that we can’t seem to get rid of. Luckily, Cissus Quadrangularis may be able to significantly reduce waist circumference as well! One cientific study reported a statistically significant 11% decrease in waist circumference over 8 weeks among people supplementing with a formula containing Cissus Quadrangularis. It also decreased C-reactive protein, which may cause inflammation in your arteries. This makes Cissus Quadrangularis a potent supplement in the battle against cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome.4
