Summer is on its way! Have you started getting ready?
We are all short on time, and finding time to go to the gym for cardio and weight training can be hard. So try to find ways to burn those extra calories throughout the day. This will help get those extra steps in, some extra calorie burn and you can then cut out some of the cardio and time at the gym!
Stand up at your desk!
You will burn more calories getting your legs, core, and back to work!
Pace back and forth while on a phone call!
This is much easier now too with so many of us working from home a few days a week.
Take regular breaks.
If you can not stand or pace while working, then take regular breaks. Just a 2 minute walk every hour can help negate all the negative metabolic effects of sitting all day!
Take extra steps.
Walk to the farther bathroom. Take the stairs. Park a little further away. Get off the subway a stop earlier and walk. Always be on the lookout for a way to get just a bit more movement in.
Be in a hurry!
Walking fast burns more calories than a slow stroll.
Play with your kids, cousins, nieces and nephews!
Take them to the park and play tag, hopscotch, hula hoop! Get some quality time together while burning calories!
Eat your protein!
Your body burns more calories digesting protein based foods over carbs and fats. You need a balance of them all, so just make sure you are not over doing the carbs and fats!
Netflix and Walk!
Instead of binge watching on the coach. Go to the gym for even a slow walk or bike ride while watching your favorite show. It does not have to be intense! Point is it is burning more calories than being on the couch!
Do your shopping in person.
I know online shopping saves time, but if you need some extra steps and none of the other ideas are helping, walking the aisle, pushing the cart, carrying bags, reaching the top shelf can add up extra calories you can not get online shopping!
Do it yourself!
Instead of using prepackaged foods, snow blowers, riding mowers and other conveniences which make things easier, go back to how it all used to be done. Cook from scratch, cut the grass with a push mower, shovel the snow yourself. All of these all burn extra calories and every little thing adds up!
Now many of these things do take extra time out of the day. So you have to pick and choose what works best for you and your goals. For overall health you may want to focus on these types of habits while strength training. If you have a more specific goal then you may want to push yourself harder in the gym, spend more time there, and then maybe you order your grocery delivery while doing cardio! Pick and choose what works best for you and your goals!
